Laurent De Scheemaecker read law at the University of Antwerp (half a year at the University of Mannheim) (Candidate in Law, 1993), at the University of Louvain (one year at the University of Barcelona) (Licentiate in Law, 1996).

He clerked with Allende & Brea, a law firm at Buenos Aires.

He was called at the bar in 1997. His legal practice focusses on business transactions and (international) commercial and trade law, maritime and transport law (including customs). He developed a wide expertise in the field of commercial litigation and arrest, in the drafting of contracts.

He was a co-author of an article analysing a poor amendment of legal provisions of arrest. This article resulted into a new amendment. According to the Parliament’s preparatory documents it appears that the legislator was guided by Laurent De Scheemaecker’s analysis.

He was a speaker at various international trade law conferences, in London, Le Havre, Rotterdam and Bruges.

He was a member of the General Council of the Belgian Maritime Law Association from 2011 to 2015.
