Birgitta Van Itterbeek

Birgitta is a partner with GDS advocaten in its Antwerp office.

Birgitta is a leading expert in aircraft finance, acting for the major airlines in Belgium, but also for lessors, financial institutions and private jet owners.  She focuses her practice on all matters relating to the fleet of aircraft, including engines, parts and maintenance thereof, but also EASA rules and regulations and pilot licences. She assists her clients, not only in transactions, but also in litigation and legal advice.

Having more than 30 years of experience in financial law, she has developed a strong practice in financial litigation and is a member since its creation of international banking litigation network.

She has a niche knowledge in legal aspects of fund management, regulatory aspects of insurance and reinsurance and complex insurance issues.

Birgitta has been partner for more than 16 years of large independent law firms in Belgium and is member of the bar since 1991.

Birgitta regularly publishes papers on selected topics in the field of banking and finance, aviation law and leasing and is frequently invited to speak at seminars.

She was selected by Who’s Who of Aviation Lawyers and Business Lawyers as a World-leading Aviation Lawyer. She is further recognized as a leading individual by Legal 500, The Expert Guide, Women in Business Law and IFLR.

She is a member of Women on Board since 2011 and a member of the board as independent director of Inpulse Investment Manager CVBA since 2017.

EDUCATION

Birgitta graduated in law from the University of Leuven cum laude in 1988.

She holds a Master’s degree (LLM) from the University of Virginia, School of Law as a Fulbright alumni in 1989.

LANGUAGES

Birgitta drafts, litigates, publishes and lectures in Dutch, French and English and has a good working knowledge of Italian.
